Credentials, doors & gates
Access control systems for every controlled entry.
Access control manages who can enter a door, gate, garage, elevator, or shared area and when access is permitted. Three Factor Security integrates readers, credentials, controllers, locking hardware, intercoms, and supported video systems around the building’s operations, user administration, and applicable life-safety requirements.

Common questions

Guidance is prepared and reviewed by Three Factor Security’s named Security Solutions Manager and Security Solutions Engineers. Final recommendations are based on a professional assessment, the existing infrastructure, the property’s operating needs, and the systems selected.
How does an access control system work?
A reader, credential, controller, locking device, door-position input, and request-to-exit device work together at each controlled opening. When a card, fob, mobile credential, PIN, or other approved credential is presented, the system checks its permissions, unlocks when authorized, and records the event for administration and review.
What happens to access control during a power outage?
Controllers and locking hardware can be supported by batteries or a UPS, while each opening is designed as fail-safe or fail-secure according to the door function, life-safety requirements, fire-alarm interface, applicable code, and authority having jurisdiction. The correct behavior must be engineered for each door—not selected as a site-wide shortcut.
Can different employees have different doors and schedules?
Yes. Administrators can assign permissions by person or group, restrict specific doors, create recurring schedules, issue temporary access, and revoke a credential without rekeying the property. Exceptions such as holidays, vendors, and after-hours access can be documented and managed separately.
Should access control be cloud-managed or on-premise?
Cloud-managed systems can simplify remote administration, updates, and multi-site visibility, while on-premise systems keep the application and database under local control but require appropriate local infrastructure and maintenance. The right architecture depends on IT policy, connectivity, site count, integration needs, administration, and lifecycle requirements.
How many doors can an access control system support?
Capacity depends on the controller architecture, software platform, network, licensing where applicable, and management model. We plan the initial door count together with realistic expansion, multi-site administration, and reporting needs so growth does not force an avoidable platform change.
Can access control integrate with cameras, alarms, and intercoms?
Yes, when compatible platforms are selected and the workflow is intentionally designed. A door event can be linked to video, a visitor call, an alarm condition, or a notification, giving authorized staff better context than a credential log alone. Life-safety and security actions remain subject to code and approved operating procedures.
What credentials and audit records are available?
Options can include cards, fobs, mobile credentials, keypads, QR credentials, and biometrics where appropriate. Supported systems also maintain searchable event records that can be filtered by user, door, event, and time. Credential choice and retention are aligned with security policy, privacy, convenience, and administration.
Can access control work with existing doors and hardware?
Often, yes. Existing doors and frames may be retained while suitable electric strikes, maglocks, electrified exit devices, readers, contacts, power supplies, and egress hardware are added. We inspect the opening, fire rating, condition, code requirements, and current hardware before deciding what can be reused.
