NVR, drives & retention
Video storage and retention planning built around the real camera mix.
Storage is not determined by camera count alone. Resolution, frame rate, codec, scene activity, bitrate, recording mode, retention, drive configuration, recorder limits, and future growth all matter.
Fieldwork inCommerceComplete planning context
More than a single device or feature.
Three Factor Security evaluates the complete recording workload: how many cameras share the recorder, each camera’s resolution and frame rate, codec and bitrate behavior, continuous or event-based recording, audio, analytics, retention targets, usable drive capacity, array overhead, recorder or server throughput, supported stream counts, network design, export needs, health alerts, and expansion headroom. Recommendations remain tied to the selected platform and its current compatibility requirements.
What should be evaluated
Decisions that shape a dependable scope.
The final design depends on verified property conditions, selected systems, supported integrations, operating workflows, and the signed project scope.
Continuous, scheduled, event-based, and analytics-assisted recording
Usable capacity after drive formatting and supported RAID overhead
Recorder or server channel, throughput, stream, and bay limits
Retention targets, evidence export, health alerts, and expansion headroom
Planning process
A structured path from need to verified operation.
Build the camera schedule
Group cameras by resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, recording hours, event behavior, and retention target.
Check platform limits
Confirm supported camera count, stream and throughput limits, drive bays, storage compatibility, array options, and system overhead for the selected platform.
Size usable storage
Estimate data volume, apply supported storage overhead, reserve operating headroom, and compare the result with available capacity.
Validate in operation
Verify recordings, playback, expected retention, system health, time, exports, alerts, and representative peak conditions after commissioning.
Coordinated capabilities
Common planning questions
Clear expectations before design begins.
Guidance is prepared and reviewed by Three Factor Security’s named Security Solutions Manager and Security Solutions Engineers. Product compatibility, performance, retention, code, privacy, monitoring, access, and response requirements remain project-specific.
Can one recorder support a mix of 4K, 5MP, 4MP, and 2MP cameras?
Many current platforms support mixed camera sets, but compatibility and capacity depend on the specific recorder, software, camera streams, codec, bitrate, frame rate, channel count, throughput, storage, and licensing. The complete design must be checked against the selected platform.
Does RAID replace a backup?
No. A supported RAID configuration can improve storage availability after certain drive failures, but it does not protect against every hardware, software, deletion, corruption, theft, disaster, or access event. Backup or evidence-archiving requirements should be planned separately.
How much retention is required?
There is no single retention period for every property. Operational needs, incident discovery time, contracts, privacy, insurance, applicable requirements, risk, storage budget, and the selected platform all affect the target. Qualified legal or compliance guidance may be appropriate for regulated use cases.
